LHSAA Girls State Meet Preview

Class C closes out with tight competition between Summerfield and Gibsland-Coleman. These two teams show some variety in their disciplines. The total team score could come down to distance and throws events since Gibsland does not have any athletes entering into these events.

Gibsland-Coleman stands strong in the sprints with Ke'honesty Williams in the 100m and 200m. Williams holds the fastest time in the 200m and the second-fastest in the 100m. She is also joined by Riley Willis in the 200m. Williams also competes in the long jump and is ranked at No. 2 in class C. In terms of the hurdles, Gibsland shows out with Samora Sampson in the 100m and 300m. Sampson is ranked No. 2 and No. 4 in these events respectively, and is followed by Shamaria Durham in the 300m hurdles. Sampson also competes in the triple jump with teammate Baleigh Haulcy. This duo looks to complete a 1-2 finish at state. Gibsland also puts forward the 4x100m, 4x200m, and 4x400m and has an opportunity to supplement their team score.

Summerfield has a noticeable presence in the sprints, distance, and throws. Leading the charge in the sprints is Malaysia Tate. Tate holds the top time in class C for the 100m and the second-best time in the 200m. Complementing Tate in the sprints discipline are Shaniya Martin and Yilacia McDaniel in the 400m. This duo is currently the No. 1 and No. 2 marks in the 400m this year in class C. Martin also qualifies and competes in the 800m, 100m hurdles, and high jump. She is truly a versatile athlete and a must-have by Summerfield.

Martin's efforts in these events could determine the outcome of the state title this coming week. In the distance category, Emma Katherine Smith qualifies in the 1600m and 3200m and is accompanied by Ella Adkins in the 1600m.

Summerfield can continue to pick up points in the shot put with Alaysia Combs and Maci Jo Moss. These two are ranked No. 3 and No. 5 coming into the state meet. Moss also competes in the javelin with Yilacia McDaniel to further opportunities in the throws discipline. Summerfield sums up its opportunities to score in the 4x200m and 4x400m. These two relay squads could possibly garner podium positions and make a large difference in team score as they face Gibsland head-on.
