LHSAA Girls State Meet Preview

The Class 2A team battle hosts a grudge match between St. Thomas Aquinas and Episcopal. Episcopal seems to gain most points from jumps and distance squads, while St. Thomas puts more emphasis on the sprints. Expect a strong fight between both teams during the relays as both gain a large portion of points from this discipline.

Episcopal gains a majority of points from the distance, hurdles, and jump events. Daila Young leads teammates Alana Simon and Bethany Reid in the 100m hurdles and 300m hurdles in that order. Young is ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in both of these events with Simon and Reid following not too far behind. This is a strong hurdles squad that creates a monopoly of potential podium spots for Episcopal. Alana Simon, in addition to the hurdles, enters the high jump and holds the top mark of the season for 2A. Simon is joined in the high jump by Frances Oliver who also competes in the long and triple jump in which she is ranked No. 2 in 2A for both. Episcopal has a diverse field of distance athletes that are guaranteed to be fresh for their events. Mia Pulliam competes in the 800m and is in contention for a podium position. Callie Hardy and Scarlett Spender enter the 1600m and are ranked No. 1 and No. 3 respectively. Spender also continues to compete in the 3200m with teammate Analise Hyde. Episcopal rounds out with a competitive line of relay squads. Episcopal hold relays that can nab a podium position from the 4x100m all the way to the 4x800m. This will be a key face-off between Episcopal and St. Thomas.

St. Thomas Aquinas's greatest strength against Episcopal is that it has a quality squad in sprints. This effort is lead by Breanna Becerra who is ranked No. 1 in the 200m, 400m, and 800m. Alongside Becerra is Madelyn Nicaud in the 400m and 800m. Nicaud is ranked No. 3 and No. 2 in both the 400m and 800m in that order. Shannon Alack can pick up some points by doubling in the 300m hurdles and high jump. Alack is ranked No. 4 and No. 2 in 2A respectively. Bringing in points from the throws division, Ava Alston competes in the shot put, discus, and javelin triple. Alston has opportunities to score points at state, but her best events are the shot put and discus throw. St. Thomas Aquinas will rack up points in the 4x200m, 4x400m, and 4x800m. The 4x400m and 4x800m are ranked No. 1 in and the 4x200m is ranked No. 2 in 2A.
