College Recaps from the 2012 McNeese Cowboy Stampede

LAKE CHARLES – Heavy rains played a big part in the running at the McNeese Cowboy Cross Country Stampede on Saturday but not bad enough for Cowboys runner Stephen Kerr to come away with the individual championship in the men's 4-mile run.
 
Kerr ran a 21:05 to edge out Walter Whitfield who was running unattached.  The next college competitor was LSU's Roger Cooke who finished with a 12:20.
 
But it was Louisiana-Lafayette, with three top 10 finishers, who came out on top in the team scoring with 37 points followed by McNeese with 44.  LSU ranked third with 49 points and Louisiana Tech rounded out the 4-team event with 88 points.
 
Alex Kiptoo was the second Cowboy runner to finish as he placed sixth with a time of 21:28 and Brock Moreaux was eighth with a 21:38.  McNeese ran without its top runners because they were taking part at the Notre Dame Invitational the day before.
 
On the women's side, LSU ran away with the team title after having all of its runners finish in the top 10 including first, second and third place.  McNeese followed with 54 points, Nicholls State came in with 78 and Louisiana-Lafayette at 92.
 
McNeese's Fionnuala Ross was the Cowgirls' top finisher after she crossed the line in fourth place with an 18:21.  LSU's Laura Carleton won the 5k race with a 17:51.
 
Amy Talbot placed ninth for the Cowgirls with a 19:30 and Laura Casey was 12th with a 19:50 time.

Cross Country Finishes Strong at Cowboys Stampede

LAKE CHARLES, La. -- Seven Lady Tigers finished inside the Top 10 to lead the LSU women's cross county team to their second-straight first-place team finish of the season with 19 points after competing at the McNeese Cowboy's Stampede at the Enos Darbonne Recreation Complex on Saturday.
 
The Tigers earned a third-place finish with a strong performance of their own as they scored 49 points in the final men's team standings.
 
The Lady Tigers were once again led by senior Laura Carleton, who finished first in 17 minutes, 51 seconds over the 5k course in Lake Charles. 
 
This is Carleton's second-consecutive first-place finish after the LSU Invitational last weekend, and her third-consecutive top-10 finish after competing in this year's Commodore Classic to open the season on Sept. 15.
 
Carleton was also named SEC Women's Runner of the Week earlier this week.
 
Other top-10 finishers for the Lady Tigers include seniorDakota Goodman placing second with a time of 18:17.00, junior Natoya Goule placing third with a time of 18:20.00, senior Brea Goodman in sixth place with a time of 18:30.00, senior Charlene Lipsey placing seventh with a time of 18:45.00, senior Leigh-Ann Naccari placed eighth with a time of 18:52.00, and junior Laura Aleman rounded out the Top 10 in 10th place with a time of 19:36.00.
 
"Although it was not the best conditions to run in, the girls ran well," said LSU head coach Mark Elliott. "It was raining extremely hard and water logged, but everyone had to run in it. I am proud of what the girls are doing. All ten girls that ran did extremely well."
 
The men's cross country team placed third overall with 49 points, led by senior Roger Cooke who placed third overall and completed the four-mile race in 21:20.00.
 
"The guys certainly ran better this week," said Elliott. "Although we weren't at full strength, we still ran well. I'm pleased with their effort this week." 
 
Junior Bryan Mutell was the next Tiger across the line with a 10th-place finish of 21:49.00. Sophomore Philip Primeaux rounded out the Top 15 with his 12th-place finish for LSU with a time of 22:10.00.
 
After three-straight weeks of competition, the LSU men's and women's cross country teams will get a well-deserved break next weekend. The Tigers and Lady Tigers will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 13, with their annual trip to Fayetteville, Ark., to compete in the Chile Pepper Festival at Agri Park Cross Country Course.

Nicholls Press Release:

LAKE CHARLES, La. - The Nicholls State University men's and women's cross country teams wrapped up competition at the McNeese Cowboy Stampede, as the Women finished third as a team, while the men didn't have enough runners to earn a team score but had all three racers finish.


In  the women's 5K event, Tessni Carruthers added another top five finish to her strong season finishing fifth overall in 18:28, which is now the fourth-best time in Nicholls history. Including Carruthers, Nicholls had four runners in the top 20 as Sarah Pressley finished 13th in 19:52, Jackie White finished 18th in 20:39.4 and Emily Charlesworth finished 20th in 20:48.

Kane Daigle was the low mark for the men, finishing in 23:22, followed by Reece Vitale's time of 23:37 andSebie O'Neill's time of 24:51.

The Nicholls women were rounded out by Ashley Johnson who finished 29th in 22:23, Emily Carrere who finished 31st in 22:44 and Victoria WilliamsTerrian Gauff and Maria Mondello who finished 32nd, 33rd and 34th, respectively.

The Nicholls men's and women's cross country teams wrap up the regular season in two weeks, competing in the Choctaw Open hosted by Mississippi College.
