McNeese Pole Vaulters Have Strong Performance In Season Opening Meet

BATON ROUGE-- McNeese\'s pole vaulters came away with top finishes here Saturday at the LSU Purple Tiger Invitational. No team results were kept.


Cowgirl vaulter Katie Shaw placed first and set a new McNeese record with a jump of 11-5 3/4, breaking the record of 11-4 she set last year.


Devin Rodriquez placed second in the men\'s pole vault with a jump of 16-0 3/4 and Ryan Lancon place third with a jump of 15-7.


The men also produced top finishes in the long jump where brothers Marcus and Derrick Brown placed in the top 5. Marcus placed second with a jump of 23-5 1/4 while Derrick placed fifth with a jump of 22-9 1/4. Valayn Jackson placed second in the shot put with a throw of 53-2 3/4. Jimbo Hill placed fifth with a throw of 50-10 1/4 and Jan Bicanic placed 11th with a throw of 48-2 1/2. Hill set a new school record in the wieght throw with a toss of 44-8 1/4.


Other top five finishers for the Cowboys was Barry Hill in the one mile run (3rd/4:29.99), Terry Lewis placed fifth in the 400 meter dash (51.77) and the 4x400 meter relay team comprised of Brad Augustus, Kerry Gremillion, Jimmie Heath and Terry Lewis placed fourth with a time of 3:30.59.

Other Cowgirls placing in the top 5 were Katrina Busjleta placing fifth in the shot put with a distance of 40-6 1/4.


McNeese State returns to action on Jan. 20 with a meet at Houston.
