JARELL JOSEPH (RIGHT) REACTS AFTER RUNNING A 400m PR AT '22 REGIONALS
This week, we feature Lake Charles College Prep's JaRell Joseph in our Salute to Seniors feature!
MileSplit LA: What was your most memorable moment in track and field?
JARELL: My most memorable Moment had to be when I ran 48.03 and I was surprised by my time and there was this picture that came from it because I had PR by like 1.5 seconds. It was also like a notice from me to college coaches and it really got my name out. Another memorable moment would be my last race of high school which was the 4x400. After (the race) I started crying a little.
MileSplitLA: What was your greatest accomplishment?
JARELL: My greatest accomplishments would have to be being an All- American and a state champion. In all my four years of high school, my team and I have won the 4x400 six times, I believe.
MileSplit LA: What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?
JARELL: My most difficult obstacle which I'm still going through would have to be problems with my hamstring. It stopped me from running a lot my senior year and from going to meets I wanted to go to. But I'm still moving forward. I was able to sign with a college even dealing with this.
MileSplitLA: What will you miss the most?
JARELL: I will most definitely miss my younger teammates. They were like brothers to me and I can't wait to see them be better than me.
MileSplitLA: What advice would you give the younger athletes?
JARELL: Advice that I would give to younger athletes would have to be to stay focused and don't get sidetracked. Track is not an easy sport and it's definitely a sport that will embarrass you if you don't put in the work.
MileSplit LA: What athletes did you enjoy competing against the most?
JARELL: My biggest competition has to be Gabriel Clement and Imani Coleman. Every time I raced them I knew I had to bring my all and do good. When I first raced Gabe he pushed me to my personal record.
MileSplit LA: Have you had role models or coaches you would like to recognize?
JARELL: My biggest role model would have to be my old coach Terrance Cahee. He is the coach who got me to fall in love with track, and helped me a lot when I first ran the 400m. My sophomore year, when I broke 49 (seconds), he ran up to me and picked me up and hugged me. My coaches have had a lot of influence on me with sports and life, and I love them for that. They grew me into the track runner I am today, and I want to thank them for that.
MileSplit LA: If you could do it all over again, would you do anything different?
JARELL: If I could do it all over, I would most definitely say starting track earlier. I didn't start really until my freshman year.
MileSplitLA: What are your post-high school or college plans?
JARELL: My college plans, I will be attending the University of Louisiana at Lafayette on a track scholarship majoring in kinesiology. I can't wait to run at the collegiate level
MileSplitLA: Who would you like to say "thank you" to?
JARELL: I want to say thank you to God first for allowing me to run. I want to says thanks to my coaches and especially my mom.
