HOUSTON - Senior Aubrey Phillips placed fourth in the 5,000-meter run and sophomore Arielle Minor finished fifth in the pentathlon Friday on the first day of the Conference USA Indoor Championships at the Bill Yeoman Field house on the University of Houston campus.

Phillips finished fourth in the 5,000m with a time of 17:05.89, just tenths of a second off the school record she set earlier this season, while freshman Laurie Dalrymple placed ninth with a personal best time of 17:35.64. Minor was just three points shy of her personal-best total in the pentathlon where she scored 3105 points. In the individual events, Minor recorded a personal best time of 9.63 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles (11th in the event), 1.54m (5-00.50) in the long jump for sixth, 9.70m (31-10.00) in the shot put for eighth, 4.81m (15-09.50) for 11th in the long jump and recorded a season-best time in the 800-meter run (2:34.46 for sixth).

Senior Gloria Asumnu earned the top qualifying spot in both the 60m and 200m with times of 7.23 and 24.17, respectively. Her 60m time is just one-hundredth of a second shy of her C-USA record time that she set at the championship meet in 2007. Also qualifying for the finals in the 60m was sophomore Jasmine Momoh, who tied her season-best time of 7.55 for seventh overall, while junior Shaina Pelham finished 21st overall in the preliminary heats with a time of 7.79.

In the 400m, sophomore Valencia Wilson qualified for the finals by placing second overall in the preliminary heats with a time of 55.91. Senior Shanon Beelendorf finished just outside of a finals qualifying placement at ninth with a time of 57.05, freshman Aieshia Brooks recorded a time of 57.92, junior Vanessa Kienast finished with a time of 58.17 and freshman Zandria Debowles recorded a time of 1:01.83. Momoh recorded a season-best time of 25.31 in the 200m to place 13th, Pelham finished with a time of 25.40, sophomore Olivia Kizzee recorded a time of 25.44 and junior Kyra Lobbins finished with a time of 26.18.

The distance medley relay team, composed of freshman Rebecca Coady, Kienast, Brooks and senior Keriann Langley, placed ninth with a time of 12:28.86. Sophomore Nicolette Taku finished 11th in the long jump with a season-best mark of 5.51m (18-01.00), while freshman Brree Carter placed 19th with a jump of 5.09 (16-08.50). Freshman Peggy Keplinger finished 11th in the pole vault, tying her personal best mark of 3.05m (10-00.00), while junior Katarina Busljeta placed 19th in the weight throw with a season-best distance of 14.38m (47-02.25).

Phillips and Minor represented all of the team points scored for the Green Wave on the first day, as Tulane stands at 10th place with nine points, but the Wave has several opportunities to pick up more points on Saturday, the championship day, with three sprint finals and five new events to take place.
