MEN'S TRACK WINDS UP PREPARATIONS FOR SWAC INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

BATON ROUGE, La. - With the SWAC Track and Field Indoor Championships set to begin this weekend, the Grambling State men’s and women’s track teams had their final tune-up this past weekend as they participated in the LSU Twilight Invitational on Friday, Feb. 22.
Javonda Newbold posted another strong week in the 200-meter run as she placed fifth with a run of 25.36.  Sha’tina Anderson posted a time of 2:29.97 in the 800-meter run and was followed by Christina Vinson as she finished eighth (2:32.17).  Electine Orido and Marissa Golson finished second and sixth, respectively in the one-mile run with times of 5:34.60 and 5:48.17.  Grace Korir finished second in the 3,000-meter run (10:57.39) while Orido finished sixth (11:33.90).  Rhaneisha Smith was GSU’s top finisher in the 60-meter hurdles as she finished eighth in the finals with a time of 9.33. In the relay events, the Lady Tiger “A” team placed second in the distance medley with a run of 13:29.33.
In the field, Dara Burton jumped a 5-4 in the high jump for a third place finish while Bobbi Davis placed sixth in the long jump after a jump of 18-09.25.  Davis returned to the field in the triple jump and had a strong outing as she placed second with a jump of 38-09.50.  The GSU throwing tandem of Rashira Bessard and Traci Reynolds finished 4-5 in the shot put with throws of 43-05 and 42-05.5, respectively.  In the weight throw, Reynolds placed fifth after a throw of 47-07.25 and Bessard seventh (46-01.5).
On the men’s side, Mickell James placed sixth in the 800-meter run while Brenton Flurry also finished sixth in the 3,000.  On the relay side, the men’s distance medley team captured first in its event with a run of 3:35.65.
Darius Lavalais tied for sixth in the high jump with a jump of 6-06 and Deangelo Waller followed with a sixth-place performance in the long jump (23-05.50).  Travis Joseph placed sixth in the triple jump (45-01.50) and Christopher Williams threw 48-08.25 in the shot put to place fifth.
