CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Southeastern Louisiana runner Everlyn Matonyei earned Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year honors after finishing eighth at the SLC Cross Country Championships Saturday morning at West Guth Park.
Matonyei was the top finisher for the Lady Lions, who finished 10th place overall in the team standings. Matonyei completed the 6K course with a time of 21:48.8. Southeastern had a chance to finish higher in the standings, but top runner Dorcus Kipkiai fell during the race and wound up finishing 61st in the race, after finishing in the top 10 in the last two pre-conference meets.
"Everlyn had a tremendous showing and we feel like if Dorcus hadn't got injured we would have had a much better showing," Southeastern head coach Sean Brady said. "Overall, I was pleased with our performance, but it's tough when your top runner goes down."
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi took the team title, as all five of their runners that scored finished in the top 20. Lamar's Clerc Koenck won the individual title, followed by teammate Renee Graham to finish in second place. The top two teams were followed by Stephen F. Austin, Texas State, Texas-Arlington, Central Arkansas, UTSA, Nicholls State, the Lady Lions and Northwestern State.
Behind Matonyei's All-SLC performance for Southeastern were Lady Lions individual finishers Kipkiai (61st, 24:38.6), Jalynn McDonald (70th, 25:47.9), Ernestine Caradine (73rd, 26:20.3), Michelle Kay (74th, 26:35.1) and Courtney Schultheis (75th, 26:54.8).
