LAKE CHARLES - Southeastern Louisiana's Kalphys Kemboi ran the fastest individual leg as the Lions finished third at the McNeese State Cross Country Invitational Friday evening on the McNeese campus.
The Lions and Lady Lions each placed third in the meet, which was delayed several times due to lightning in the area. Because of the inclement weather conditions, the meet started an hour late.
"Considering the conditions, I was pleased with our performance," Southeastern head coach Sean Brady commented. "We want to continue to improve and we're looking forward to competing at LSU in our next meet."
Kemboi ran a 7:24 leg for the Lions and teamed with Shane Raynors, Rosendo Vallejos and Ray Rodriguez for a team time of 32:55. Sam Houston State won the meet with a composite time of 31:42, followed by McNeese State (32:02), the Lions and the Sam Houston State B squad (33:16).
On the women's side, the Southeastern team of Jaylynn McDonald, Michelle Kay, Courtney Schuttheis and Ernestine Carodine finished with a time of 42:08. Sam Houston State took meet honors with a 38:56 time, followed by McNeese State (41:37), the Lady Lions and the Sam Houston State B team (42:49).
Southeastern will be back in action on Sept. 22, competing in the LSU Cross Country Festival.
