LAFAYETTE – Three NCAA Regional qualifying performances, including a win in the men’s 4x100 meter relay, and Aaron Heflin’s victory in the 3000 meter steeplechase highlighted Northwestern State’s participation Saturday in the Louisiana Classics track and field meet.

The Demons’ 4x100 meter relay time of 40.66 by Michael Batts, Nathan Brown, Jamel Jackson and All-American Ravyn Hayward wasn’t an improvement over last week’s blistering 40.38 at the NSU Relays, but it did meet the NCAA Regional standard.

Shanae Steward met the NCAA standard with a 13.84 time in the women’s 100 meter hurdles while taking second in that event. Tracy Rew gave NSU a regional-qualifying performance in the women’s shot put with a 47-0 3/4 mark that was second behind a 47-3 ½ from Shaterika Allen of Louisiana Tech.

Heflin ran a personal best 9:54.7 to capture the steeplechase.

“Overall we had a decent day, and did at least as well as any other team here,” said veteran NSU head coach Leon Johnson. “We are pleased to get the regional qualifying performances by Shanae and Tracy and it was good to see the men’s 4x100 team run well again.”

Hayward ran only in the 4x100 relay. NSU’s other All-American, javelin thrower Cody Fillinich, will make his outdoor debut next weekend at LSU.

Lesley Lambert ran a personal record 4:57.55 for NSU and took third in the women’s 1500 meter run.

Jackson ran third for the Demons in the men’s 100 with an 11.00 time into the wind. Rachel Hoffman gave NSU second in the women’s 400 meter hurdles in 1:06.11. The Lady Demons (Flowers, Forest, Steward and Jazmen Williams) were third in the 4x100 in 47.25 and fourth in the 4x400 relay (Flowers, Shannon Foley, Forest, Phillis Ihaenacho) in 3:55.42.

Freshman Spencer Morgan cleared 14-11 to take third in the men’s pole vault. Steward was third in the women’s triple jump (37-10). Corey Jones gave NSU third in the men’s discus at 162-8.

Batts ran a 48.50 for fourth in the men’s 400. He ran the lead leg trailed by Brown, Charles Green and Chad Leath on the 4x400 relay team which ran 3:16.12 for fourth place.

Stephen Kemei (4:01.74) and Chris Pearson (4:02.10) ran 5-6 in the men’s 1500 for the Demons.

In the women’s 200, Anna Forest ran 25.35 and Samantha Flowers 25.40 for a 5-6 finish.

The Lady Demons got a fifth place in the women’s hammer by Alison Holmes with a 167-0 throw. Dawn Comeaux was sixth in the women’s javelin at 130-3.
