LA#6 Baton Rouge's Phillip Goettert(15:24)

How Many Years have you been running?
I've been running for 4 years, since Cross Country season 2003

What got you started on running?
I quit football in eighth grade and decided to give running a try – and I liked it more than basketball which I also played in my freshman year.

What's your typical week of mileage/ training consist of?
Cross Country: -Between 30-40 miles a week -mix of long runs, fartlek, and speed work (including sprints) Track: -around 30 miles a week -medium/long runs, and more speed work

Thoughts on your Coach
I have had four different coaches in my four years of running. Each of them contributed their own training methodologies and I received a wide variety of training concepts. I learned from all of them and had my special moments.

Most memorable race you have run this year/and in your career?
This year was the Walker Shootout because it was my first race after being voted eligible by the LHSAA. It was also my fastest 3-mile time so far. My most memorable run ever was my second career race, a two-miler (in eighth grade) when I improved from 12:43 to 11:24. In this race I learned I could compete with the top runners of my age group

What are you looking forward/ getting excited about the state meet?
The new competition (I moved from 3A to 5A). State is always a special race.

What's your motivation to keep pushing in races when you're out front alone and know you have it won?
The faster I run, the faster I'm done.

What is/ were your goals for this season/ and do you feel you have met them/will meet them?
Consistently running under 16 minutes (my best time last year was 16:05) and staying healthy.

What do you do when you are not running/hobbies etc?
Studying for school, reading, keeping up with all the school club projects, starting to prepare for college, hanging out with friends, playing basketball. Are you going to continue running in college?
Yes, I am looking forward to running in college.

If you could tell a young and upcoming runner one thing that helped you reach where you are right now what would it be? Enjoy running – if you don't like your workouts, you're not putting in the full effort and won't get the results you hope for or expect from yourself.

How's it feel to have the 5th fastest time in Louisiana this year? When you show up to a meet do you feel others are intimidated and how do you keep yourself humble with the amount of success you have enjoyed?
I really didn't think too much about the placement of my time - I am more concerned with how I place in meets. I think that some people recognize me but in general I am relatively unknown.

Do you visit LARunning often? any suggestions? ha sorry for my own knowledge
Yes, typically every other day. Just as a side note to anyone who has had arguments about this in the past - the correct spelling of my name is: Philipp Goettert and I am currently attending Baton Rouge High.
