Jorge and Ed Torres of Colorado

Trackshark.com Jorge Torres is coming off the 2002 NCAA cross country title (Alex Moore)

1. What will you be concentrating on this spring, and what kind of goals are you hoping to achieve?

Jorge: I am planning to concentrate in the 5k. I would like to win a NCAA title in track before my college days are up. As far is times go, I have a vision of running under 13:15 in the 5k. Which I hope will get me to the World Championships in Paris this summer.

Ed: I will be concentrating on the 10k this spring. My goal for this spring is to be top 3 at the NCAA 10k. I hope to run in the 28:20s. I also wish to bring my 5k time down to 13:40.

2. Jorge, I heard that Ed really stepped things up during cross to help you out. How did that help you at NCAA's?

Jorge: Ed has always been there for me. This past fall when Dathan went down with an injury. I thought that I would have to do all my long runs on my own. It turned out that Ed stepped it up in his training and he was able to join me on my long runs. Anytime I see my brother running well it motivates me to work that much harder. I'm sure it works the other way around too.

3. What kind of (if any) rivalry exists between you and your brother?

Ed: The only rivalry we have comes in another sport called Basketball.

Jorge: Rivalry? Hmmmm. I will have to say that there is no rivalry. Ed and I have a mutual respect for one another. We get along really well as teammates and most importantly as brothers. We work together and not against one another.

4. Everyone can imagine the good things about having a twin brother to train with, but are there any downsides?

Ed: The down-side to having a twin is that if he's better than you its hard to win a race. The other downside is sometimes i want to run by myself and take it easy and of course Jorge always likes to run with a partner so he joins me.

Jorge: I guess the only downside to having a twin brother that is a training partner will have to be that I have to see him a lot. But it really is not that bad because it's like looking into a mirror and saying to yourself "Dam, I look good." Just Joking!

5. How can having a twin in the same race play to your advantage? Are there any race tactics you've ever tried?

Ed: The only advantage of having a twin in a race is the fact that you can key yourself of him. Mentally it helps too, knowing that he's going trough the same thing you're going through helps me. In High School Jorge use to take the races out hard and burn out the competition, then i would come from behind to beat the guys doing the skeleton dance.
