MONROE, La. --- The Louisiana Monroe track and field teams begin the 2006 indoor season on Saturday, Jan. 14 at the LSU Purple Tiger Invitational.
\"The team has been practicing for the past two days and we are ready to roll,\" said ULM head coach J.D. MALONE.
The majority of the ULM men\'s and women\'s teams will be participating in Saturday\'s meet, including 14 freshmen women and seven freshmen men who will be competing in their first intercollegiate meet.
Malone expects several student-athletes to have good performances in the first meet of the season.
Featured on the women\'s side are junior Felicia Lee in the high jump, sophomores Tiffany Holmes and Sherita Price in the sprints, sophomore Amanda Bartlett in the mile, and senior Lilia Riveria in the throws. Two freshmen are expected to do well out of the gate, Destiny Montemayer in the throws and Kathleen Gancayco in the pole vault.
Even though he is still recovering from an injury during the cross country season, junior Maya Aden is expected to run the men\'s 5,000-meter race. Sophomore Rani Giladi will compete in the long jump and triple jump. Juniors Matt Brophy and Nathan Hall will compete in the mile run, while sophomores Malcolm Bosworth and Kendrick Shepherd will run the 400-meter run. Newcomers are also supposed to make an impact. Freshman Mychal Word will also run the 400, while junior transfer Walt Williams will compete in the throws.
ULM will continue competition on Friday, Jan. 27 at the LSU Bayou Bengal Invitational.
