Daniel Mutai Breaks School Record in 10,000-Meter Run on First Day of Sun Belt Track & Field Champio

 

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Sophomore Daniel Mutai bested his own school record as he ran to a runner-up finish in the men's 10,000-meter run late Friday evening on the first day of the Sun Belt Championships at Dean A. Hayes Stadium.

 

Mutai clocked a time of 30:21.98 to narrowly finish behind Shadrack Kipchirchir of Western Kentucky, who picked up the win with a time of 30:16.87. Both Mutai and Kipchirchir shattered the stadium record of 30:43.11 set in 2009.

 

It was a two-person race all the way as Mutai cleared the third-place finisher by more than 30 seconds.

 

The Championships resume Saturday at 9 a.m. with the final day of the decathlon and heptathlon and the finals of many of the field events.
