Mutai Wins 3,000-Meter Steeplechase to Pace ULM at LSU Alumni Gold

 

BATON ROUGE, La. - Sophomore Daniel Mutai continued his strong season with a victory in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase at the LSU Alumni Gold Saturday at the Bernie Moore Track.

 

Mutai finished in a time of 9:19.42 to finish first ahead of LSU's Alden Heaphy (9:37.03) and South Florida's Lucas Simari (9:38.83). Senior Moses Chelimo came in fourth place with a time of 9:41.79. It marked the second title for Mutai in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and his fifth title overall this season.

 

In addition, Mutai had a runner-up finish in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:53.87. Matt Wolfe of Louisiana Tech edged Mutai for the win in a time of 3:53.58.

 

Junior Josh Howard turned in a jump of 15.04 meters on his final attempt to win the men's triple jump title. Howard finished ahead of Kenneth Bellard of UL-Lafayette, who had a best leap of 15.00 meters to finish second.

 

Junior Luther Ambrose finished 10th in a stacked 100-meter dash competition which featured four Olympic runners. Ambrose' time was the fastest in the Sun Belt this season.

 

Junior Derek Dark took fifth place in the men's shot put (16.45 meters) and junior Keyon Jones finished fifth in the men's 400-meter dash (48.45).

 

On the women's side, senior Jerrica Thomas came just short of winning her sixth triple jump title of the season with a runner-up spot. Thomas leapt a season-high of 12.56 meters to finish behind Marqueshia Stallworth of South Florida, who had a best leap of 12.63 meters. Thomas now has the second-best triple jump in the Sun Belt this season.

 

Sophomore Madeleine Robertson turned in a solid performance with a runner-up finish in the women's 1,500-meter run. Robertson clocked a season-high time of 4:54.09 to finish just behind Petrona Layne of UL-Lafayette (4:50.91).

 

ULM will host its lone home tournament of the season with the ULM Warhawk Classic Saturday, April 30.
