School Record Highlights Tulane Team Challenge

NEW ORLEANS - In the first meet hosted by the Tulane track and field program since 2005, the Green Wave posted a second place finish on the women's side and finished third in the men's meet at the Tulane Team Challenge hosted at Tad Gormley Stadium. Ana Ruzevic highlighted the evening with a school record toss in the javelin and Rebecca Coady won three events in the outdoor season opener.

The women's program posted eight event wins in the season opener, claiming the 100, 200, 800, 1500, 3000 and 4x100-meter running events, along with the high jump and the javelin in the field. In the men's program,Koplan Nwabuoku claimed the 400-meter dash and anchored the 4x100-meter relay team to the teams only other victory of the night.

"We've been feeling good about our team all the way through the indoor season and this (meet) was a good transition for our program," said Tulane head coach Eric Peterson. "We improved a lot at the conference (indoor) championships and to start the year off as well as we did today, collectively and individually, we fell like we are off to a good start."

Ruzevic highlighted the meet with a personal-best and school record throw in the javelin, opening up the event with her best toss. The junior uncorked four throws of better than 48-meters and the toss of 51.37-meters on her opening throw set a new school record in the event. The mark was nearly a full meter better that the previous mark (50.48m) held by Helmi Leppanen that was set on May 10, 2002. She also placed fifth in the hammer throw and sixth in the discus. 

 

he Green Wave opened the meet with a sweep of the 4x100-meter relay events, with the women and men both winning the sprint relay. Kasey Rodgers,Jamie RilesHilary Woods and Tiffany George won the event with a time of 45.18, while Christopher ArechigaJared FirestoneJon Frano and Nwabuoku ran their fastest time in the last two seasons at 42.14.

Coady opened her senior outdoor campaign with a trifecta of individual victories, winning the 800, 1500 and 3000-meter runs. Coady led from the opening gun through the final stride of each race she ran, claiming the 800-meter in 2:14.43, the 1500-meter run in a time of 4:41.11 and the senior then closed the meet by running 10:22.23 to grab the 3000-meter event.

Nwabuoku opened up his senior campaign with a bang by winning the 400-meter dash in a career best time of 48.61, which ranks sixth in school history.

Rodgers continued her solid junior campaign with a victory in the 100-meter dash and a time of 11.62. Her season opening showing is the second fastest time in Tulane school history and is 0.02-seconds faster than Asha James ran in 2001.

The Green Wave will next compete at the Louisiana Classics on March 19, 2011 at the Ragin' Cajuns Track/Soccer Stadium in Lafayette, La.
