Elmore Wins Women's Shot Put Title to Pace Warhawks in Day One of Sun Belt Indoor Track & Field Cham

 JONESBORO, Ark. - Lakeitha Elmore took home the women's shot put title to lead the ULM track & field squads in the first day of the Sun Belt Indoor Championships, hosted by Arkansas State. The ULM women completed day one in seventh place with 12.5 points, while the men are tied for eighth place with South Alabama with six points.

 

Elmore, a senior from Ruston, La., had a best mark of 14.80 meters to edge Western Kentucky's Monteka Flowers, who earned runner-up honors with a throw of 14.79 meters. The title is the second of Elmore's career as she also took home first place in shot put two years ago.

 

Sophomore Nefertiti Beckett was the only other Warhawk to score on the women's side, earning 2.5 points with a sixth-place finish in the high jump. Beckett skied 1.60 meters to finish tied for sixth with North Texas' Shahaf Bareni. Ann Dudley of Middle Tennessee won the event with a jump of 1.70 meters.

 

In the men's shot put, junior Derek Dark earned sixth place with a top mark of 15.38 meters, while brother Preston Dark finished just outside the top 8 in ninth place with a best mark of 14.98 meters. UL-Lafayette's Myles Melancon threw 17.09 meters to pick up the victory.

 

The men also scored in the distance medley, earning two points with a seventh-place finish (11:21.83). Junior Keyon Jones tallied one point with an eighth-place finish in the men's long jump (6.95 meters).

 

Both teams will be back in action tomorrow for day two of the Sun Belt Championships inside the Convocation Center.
