Track and Field Welcomes Competitors for Annual Bayou Bengal

BATON ROUGE -- LSU\'s track and field team returns to action Friday when it hosts the Bayou Bengal Invitational at the Carl Maddox Fieldhouse.

The meet will begin at 3 p.m. with the field events. Running events will follow at 6 p.m.

LSU will welcome 10 teams from throughout Louisiana and the South as Louisiana Tech, Mississippi State, Northwestern State, Sam Houston State, Southeastern Louisiana, Southern Miss, Stephen F. Austin, Tulane, UL-Lafayette and UL-Monroe are all scheduled to appear.

LSU will emphasis its work in the short sprints and hurdles and field events this week.

\"The Fieldhouse is a great place to jump so we need to take advantage of the facility and make progress in those events,\" said LSU head coach Dennis Shaver.

All-Americans Willie Bradley and Tina Harris will each be in action in the field. Bradley will compete in the triple jump for the Tigers, while Harris is expected to do both the long jump and the triple jump for the Lady Tigers.

On the track, the Tigers will run Olympian Kelly Willie and freshman standout Xavier Carter among others in the 60-meter dash.

Lady Tigers RaNysha LeBlanc and Ashley Owens will each be seeking NCAA automatic qualifying times in their signature events. LeBlanc reached the provisional standard in the 60-meter hurdles last week at the Razorback Invitational. Owens has posted provisional marks in the 60-meter dash in each of her first two meets of the season.

In the throwing events, senior Katie McKeever will look to remain undefeated in the shot put. The Woodland, Calif., native has won two straight competitions, taking home titles from both the Purple Tiger and Razorback Invitationals.

Following the Bayou Bengal Invitational, LSU will make its annual trek to New York City for the Armory Invitational, Feb. 4-5.
