Six wins, five seconds for NSU at Lamar meet

BEAUMONT, Texas -- Freshman sprinter Justin Walker provided two of the six wins for Northwestern State at Saturday's 49th Annual Ty Terrell Relays track and field meet hosted by Lamar, while freshmen Sarah Jones and Delanie Knock picked up their first collegiate victories for the Lady Demons.

Walker also ran on the Demons' winning 4x100 meter relay team, taking the baton from Quincy Davison and handing to Kendal Taylor before Michael Green brought it home first in 40.84, the quartet's second-best time this spring behind last week's 40.60 at the Texas Relays.

Also finishing first from NSU was standout women's thrower Trecey Rew in the discus. She had a  163-5 mark, a little more than half a foot shy of her season's best that is 21st nationally. She did not compete in the shot put, where she is ranked fifth nationally.

Walker ran season-best times to capture the 100 (10.43) and 200 (21.01) meter dashes.

Jones had a personal-best 5-5 1/4 clearance to take the women's high jump, finished second in the triple jump (36-3 1/2) and took fourth in the long jump (18-1 1/4).

Nock won the women's javelin with a 127-2 throw.

Northwestern notched five runner-up finishes and four thirds during the meet.

Lady Demon sprint star Anna Forest had two second place marks, 11.92 in the 100 and 24.63 in the 200. Chantel Bratton gave NSU second in the women's shot put (42-2 1/4) and was also fifth in the discus (118-11).

Morgan Redmon was the runner-up in the men's shot put with a 46-0 3/4 throw for Northwestern.

Other third places for NSU competitors came from Lawana Perkins in the women's 800 (2:21.33), just ahead of teammate Karensa Ellis (2:22.13); by Erin Knox in the women's 400 meter hurdles (1:05.51); and from P.J. Bennett in the men's 110 meter hurdles (14.64).

Finishing fourth from Northwestern, along with Ellis in the 800 and Jones in the long jump,  was Green in the men's 200 (21.37) and Triston Dodd in the men's discus (144-10). The Demons took three of the top five spots in the 200, with Walker's win, Green in third and Taylor fifth in 21.83.

Northwestern will compete again next Saturday at LSU.
