NSU brings 4 national top 15 marks to UTA meet

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Led by two Top 10 national rankings by thrower Trecey Rew, Northwestern State boasts four performances among the top 15 in the country heading into the first big meet of the 2010 season Saturday at the UTA Bobby Lane Track and Field Invitational.

TCU, SMU, Iowa State, Division II power Abilene Christian, Wichita State and North Texas are among the teams participating, along with Southland Conference rivals McNeese, Stephen F. Austin, Texas State and host Texas-Arlington.

Rew is sixth in the country in the shot put after her winning 51-7 3/4 mark last week at the Louisiana Classics meet in Lafayette. She stands 10th nationally with a 160-9 discus best, also last Saturday.

Green ranks 12th nationally in the 400 meter dash with his 47.49 time last week and is part of the Demons' relay team with Kendal Taylor, Michael Batts and Justin Walker that ranks seventh in the 4x400 with a 3:10.90 time.

Along with their marks, Northwestern has five more that lead the Southland Conference rankings: P.J. Bennett in the men's 110 meter hurdles (14.24), Joshua Commiato in the men's high jump (6-9 3/4), Andrea Warren in the women's 800 (2:16.69), Keyera Thomas in the women's high jump (5-5 3/4), and Rew in the hammer throw (163-7).

"This will be a very good competition," said veteran Demons head coach Leon Johnson. "The weather is going to be good and there are some strong teams entered. This is also the site for this year's Southland Conference Championships, so we will get our young athletes experience at UTA that will benefit them in May."

The Texas Relays are the next competition for Northwestern, beginning next Wednesday night in Austin.
