Every hammer throw athlete for Southeastern Louisiana set a personal best during the Jim Mize Invitational at Louisiana Tech as part of a weekend that saw the team divided between Ruston and the Louisiana Classics at Louisiana-Lafayette. Adonson Shallow’s winning effort in the men’s competition set a new school record, whileRenada Living captured a victory on the women’s side. Shallow threw the apparatus 217 feet, 7 inches (66.31 meters), while teammate Faisal Muhammad took second place in men’s hammer, putting up a mark of 188 feet, 3 inches (57.37 meters). Shallow also won the discus competition, launching it 187 feet (56.99 meters). In women’s hammer, Southeastern earned four of the top five spots. Living led the way with a toss of 157 feet, 8 inches (48.05 meters), followed by Amber Thomas in second place at 155 feet, 1 inch (47.26 meters). Jessica Fekete claimed third place at 142 feet, 11 inches (43.56 meters), and Shalicia Rochon rounded out the Lady Lions’ contingent at 131 feet, 2 inches (39.97 meters). In sprints at Louisiana Tech, Shannon Grover was the top performer. He took home an event title in the 200 meter dash (21.09), and was also part of the victorious 4x100 meter relay team’s show. Malcolm Carter, Grover, Rocky Caruth and Jerel Butler combined to run a time of 41.25. Only two schools fielded teams for the relay, the other being the home standing Bulldogs, who were disqualified. 2008 Southland Conference javelin champion Yvette Schubert won that event in her first appearance of the 2010 outdoor season, marked at 141 feet, 1 inch (43 meters). She edged Rochon, who finished in second place at 135 feet, 8 inches (41.35 meters), and Chelsea Steele in third place at 134 feet, 6 inches (40.99 meters). “We faced some wintery conditions in Ruston,” head coach Sean Brady said. “It was windy, cold and there was drizzling rain. Considering the circumstances, it was pretty outstanding.” As a team in Ruston, the Southeastern men fell to Louisiana Tech, 232-137, and beat Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 168-150. The Lady Techsters beat the Lady Lions, 260.5-184.5, and got past UAPB, 203-175. In Lafayette, Michelle Ogashi had a solid day in jumps. She finished second in triple jump, leaping 38 feet, 4.75 inches (11.7 meters). Ogashi also captured seventh in long jump, with her best effort marked at 17 feet, 4.25 inches (5.29 meters). Brittany Pfantz finished second in pole vault. The freshman cleared 11 feet, 5.75 inches (3.5 meters). Southeastern’s squad will be reunited next week for the Tiger Relays, hosted by LSU. Competition will be held Friday and Saturday at Bernie Moore Stadium.
