Tigers Third, Lady Tigers Seventh at Auburn Invitational

AUBURN, Ala. -- Behind a top-10 finish by junior Patrick Gavin the Tiger cross country team stormed to a third-place finish at the highly competitive Auburn Invitational Monday. The Lady Tigers finished seventh overall.

Portland won the men\'s title scoring just 36 points. Host Auburn (74) and the Tigers (124) rounded out the top three.

On the women\'s side, Samford tallied 50 points in taking home the team crown. They were followed by Auburn (78) and Mississippi State (81). The Lady Tigers finished with 193 points.

\"Team-wise I think we did extremely well,\" said LSU cross country coach Mark Elliott. \"For the men to finish in the top three without Jimmy (Wiggins) even running his best race just goes to show the kind of depth we have this year.\"

Wiggins, who is normally the top finisher for the Tigers, still managed to score for the squad, but landed outside the top-10 for the time this season, placing 41st overall with a time of 26:27.00.

Gavin took the reigns for LSU, finishing eight overall with a season-best time of 25:20.87. He was followed by senior Sam Mwape (20th, 25:54.64), junior Roland LeBlanc (30th, 26:13.31) and sophomore Drew Haro (36th, 26:22.04).

The women posted a solid effort despite their top runner, senior Ruth Nanyinza, not finishing the race due to illness.

Senior Katie Denton turned in her third straight top-20 finish, placing 19th overall with a time of 19:12.47. Fellow senior Neisha Bernard-Thomas clocked 20:01.72 to place 36th. Michelle Hymel (20:01.72), Erin Vandivort (20:03.76) and Jennifer Radecker (20:05.70) rounded out the list of scorers for the Lady Tigers, placing 45th, 48th and 50, respectively.

Both the Tigers and Lady Tigers will have a short five-day break before returning to action Saturday at the Chile Pepper Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.
