Ambrose Sets School Record as Track and Field Competes at Texas Tech

 LUBBOCK, Texas – Luther Ambrose won the men’s 55-meter dash in a new school-record time to highlight the Texas Tech Open on Saturday (Feb. 6) for the ULM track and field team. 

Ambrose won the 55-meter dash in a school-record time of 6.26 seconds, three one-hundredths of a second ahead of Keyth Talley of North Texas. Ambrose won the fifth heat of the 55 meters with an identical time of 6.26 to advance to the finals. Ambrose just missed the NCAA Indoor Provisional qualifying time of 6.25 seconds. 

Ashton Croft earned third-place for the Warhawks in the weight throw. Croft had a top throw of 15.14m (49-8 1/4) in the competition. Wayland Baptist’s Brandon Mansfield won the event with a toss of 17.07m (56-0).

In the shot put, Lakeitha Elmore claimed a third-place finish for ULM. Elmore best effort of 13.95m (45-9 1/4) was good enough to take third, Michelle Carter, competing unattached, won the event with a throw of 17.98m (59-0). In the men’s shot put, Derek Dark earned third with a top throw of 15.66m (51-4 1/2). Tyler Menges of host Texas Tech won the shot put with a toss of 17.37m (57-0). 

Taylor Hill and Aleesha Mullen both earned top-five finishes for ULM in the high jump. Hill took fourth with a top leap of 1.59m (5-2 1/2), while Mullen tied for fifth, clearing 1.54m (5-0 1/2). North Texas’ Suzy Prikryl won the high jump, clearing 1.64m (5-4 1/2). 

The Warhawks took fourth in the men’s distance medley relay, crossing the line in a time of 10:56.60. The ULM DMR team was made up of Hunter Russell, Devin Caldwell, David Jones and Kendall Robbins. West Texas A&M won the men’s DMR with a time of 10:41.25. 

Moses Chelimo finished the 5,000-meter run in 15:44.94, good enough to earn fifth-place. Kennedy Kithuka of Wayland Baptist won the event in 13:54.54, over a minute faster than any other competitor. 

Jerrica Thomas earned sixth-place in the long jump with a top leap of 5.33m (17-6). Erynn Young of South Plains won the long jump with a top measurement of 5.70m (18-8 1/2).

Dimitri Hampton earned ninth-place in the 200-meter dash. Hampton, running in the third of 13 sections, won his section with a time of 22.13 seconds. His effort claimed ninth among the 58 competitors in the 200 meters, Rashaud Hawk of Texas Tech won the 200, clocking in at 21.27 seconds. 

The Warhawks will return to competition on Friday (Feb. 19) when they travel to Baton Rouge, La., to compete in the LSU Twilight.
