NOAH MOONEY (60) COMPETES IN THE 2023 LHSAA STATE XC CHAMPIONSHIP
Day Two of Louisiana high school cross country's "Regional Week" is in the books and it's time to check in on each region and see where MileSplit LA had it right...and in one region-wrong.
D1 Region 2
We got it right here. Catholic High Baton Rouge and St. Joseph's Baton Rouge both won as predicted. Let's stop and give the Dutchtown boys' team a shout out. Led by seniors Mason Heffernan and Landen Juneau, the Griffins gave the Bears all they wanted. Catholic, led by junior Johnathan Thompson, won by three points, 50-53. Peyton Levy, the senior from Walker, was the winner in the boys division with a time of 15:30.
On the girls' side, the team race was not as close. SJA's Michelle Daigle ran a 16:56 for a dominating win and led the Stickers to a 22-91 advantage over Baton Rouge High, who was led by junior Lucy Thomas 17:56.
D1 Region 3
You win some. You lose some. And we definitely dropped the ball in this region where we thought Jesuit and Mt. Carmel would come away with victories. A quick history lesson would have helped us here if we looked back to past years and remembered that the Blue Jays hold out their top runners like Brady Mullen and Brady Monahan for this one.
But that's not take anything away from the Brother Martin Crusaders, who won their second consecutive D1 Region 3 championship. The Crusaders were led by Noah Mooney, who won the boys' race with a 15:07.
Brother Martin scored 25 points. Jesuit, led by freshman Race Hughes (15:44), was the runner-up with 42 points.
On the girls' side, it was two freshmen--Northshore's Grace Keene (18:21) and Ben Franklin's Adele Ajmi (19:15)--who came through the line in the top two spots. Dominican, led by sophomore Grace Schneider (19:41), edged out Mt. Carmel for the team title by an eight-point title.
D3 Region 2
MileSplit LA correctly predicted the Episcopal boys' and Parkview Baptist's girls to take home the hardware in D3 Region 2. Three Parkview Baptist Eagles--Aiden Monistere (15:12), Reed Boudreaux (16:27), and LAndrew Watts (16:34)-- soared through the line in the first three spots in the boys race, but it wasn't enough as sophomore Trace Macias (16:51) led a pack of Crusaders, who finished No. 4 through No. 8 to scored a 30-58 win.
Parkview Baptist sisters Lucy Cramer (17:15) and Molly Cramer (17:38) finished No. 1 and No. 2 in the girls' race to give the Eagles a 23-43 win over Episcopal.
D3 Region 3
Two seniors led Newman to a sweep in D3 Region 3...and made MileSplit LA in correctly predicting both boys and girls teams would come out on top. Maslen L'Esperance won the boys' title with a time of 16:14.
The Newman boys edged out De La Salle 29-57.
On the girls' side, seniors Avery Summerour and CC Eustis led the Greenies to a 21-57 win over Haynes Academy.
