TASTY RACE: LSU HS Qualifier Boys' 4x800!

PARKVIEW BAPTIST'S AIDEN MONISTERE LEADS AT THE BEGINNING OF THE FINAL LEG!

There are a few things certain in life. Death, Taxes, and the Catholic Bears flexing their depth in the relays during the  track and field season. It was no different on Saturday at the LSU High School Qualifier as the Bears won both the 4x800 (8:27.62) and 4x400.

Many times, it is common to witness the Bears dominating the race. This was not one of those times as they struggled from the beginning and had to claw their way back into the race before senior Matthew Maynard would take the lead 50 meters into the final leg and slowly pull away from the rest of the field.

D.J Hudson (1:03.1, 1:03.82) kicked it off for Catholic.

"I had a rough first lap," Hudson said. "I had a 32 I think. So then after the first lap, I started passing people who were slowing down. Then, in the third lap, I had a near fall, and in the fourth lap.. I just finished it off."

From there, Ethan Pham (1:02.2, 1:05.9)  took the baton for the Bears.

"We were in third place," Pham said. "So, I wanted to stand on business and that's what I did."

"I haven't run an 800 since last," Chris McCullen (1:04.1, 1:06.3) said. "I wanted to drop a 2:15. I was just happy with that."

But it was Maynard's (1:01.4, 1:00) anchor leg which took the Bears to the top of the podium at the Carl Maddox Fieldhouse. It was his first of three trips on the day as he won the open 800m (2:02.37) and then finished the meet with anchor leg on Catholic's winning 4x400m relay (3:29.23).
