DEMETRIA HARRIS COMPETES IN THE '22 LHSAA STATE INDOOR MEET
Huntington senior Demetria Harris showed on Saturday that you can teach an old Raider new tricks.
Harris, who helped the Lady Raiders to their first state championship in 35 years last May, picked up a new event--the triple jump--and it proved to be a resounding success in her season opener at the McNeese Indoor No.1 in Lake Charles.
Harris won the triple jump with a 37-7.5 winning by over a foot to her closest competitor-Whitehouse, Texas' Zion Smith. Harris' mark erases the old record set by Franklin's Spring Wilson in 2009.
Harris' first jump in the competition was 36-6.
"It was a proud and shocking experience being that it was my first time ever triple jumping," Harris said. "
She saved her best jump for last. She did not know what the record in the triple jump was going into the meet, and she had the record until her coach sent her a text.
"I feel very happy and excited about this accomplishment," Harris said.
Like last year, Harris will begin hurdling at this Saturday's LSU High School Qualifier. She opened her junior campaign with a 9.29. She finished as the LHSAA D1 runner-up in the event.
