Westgate HC Philip Guidry Announces He Is Leaving WHS!

PHILIP GUIDRY TAKES A PIC WITH WHS'S COLLECTION OF LHSAA TROPHIES!

Just after 11am on Tuesday morning, Westgate head track and field coach Philip Guidry announced on social media that he would be leaving New Iberia and taking a teaching and coaching position in Florida.

"At this point in my career, I am accepting a teaching and coaching position in Florida," Guidry wrote. "I will forever be grateful to my principal, Ms. Neely Anne Moore, and AD Ryan Antoine, numerous faculty, parents, New Iberia community, and most importantly the students and student-athletes God blessed me to lead."

Guidry started as an assistant at Westgate High School in 2014 while teaching at Anderson Middle School. In 2015, Westgate won their first state title in track. In 2018, Westgagte promoted Guidry to the position of head track and field and cross country coach. Under Guidry's leadership, the Tigers have won the last three LHSAA Class 4A State Outdoor championships.

Under Guidry's coaching and mentorship, Westgate's Dedrick Latulas worked his way to win 2023 MileSplit LA Boys Athlete of the Year. When he talked about the honor, Latulas gave Guidry credit for his accomplishments.

"Coach Guidry mentored, constantly pushed me to be the best version of myself, and even saw greatness in me before I did," Latulas said. "I only wanted to play football-honestly, but with help of Coach Guidry, I became a better track athlete which transferred to the football field, a better person, and grew a greater connection with the Lord. I'm grateful to have such a well-rounded coach who pointed to a straight direction of greatness."
