ASH Lady Trojans Win Region 1-5A Meet!

ALEXANDRIA SENIOR HIGH GIRLS CELEBRATE AFTER WINNING THE REGION 1-5A MEET!

A week after Alexandria Coach Sedarrin Freeman's Lady Trojans won their head coach's first District 2-5A Championship, ASH added a Region 1-5A Championship plaque to the trophy case.

Like last week, ASH got off to a strong start in field events, where they picked up 32 points in the javelin and pole vault alone.

"Today has been crazy," Freeman said. "I'm impressed with their resolve. The weather has been up and down, but our girls have stayed laser focused and locked in. We had one hiccup when our girl jumped in the 200m. I got to looking at the numbers and I was like this is going to make it a little closer, but our girls pulled through and did an awesome job-even in the weather."

Both Alexis Guillory and  Lauren Roberts defended their Region 1-5A titles from a year ago, and both had to overcome some adversity to get it done. Guillory saved her best for last in the javelin, waiting until her last throw, which sailed out to 139-2.75, moving her past her teammate Sarah Dupuy, who finished second with a throw of 136-7.

Roberts overcame a wet runway to win the pole vault with a jump of 11-0. The LHSAA Division I State Champion will now set her sights on winning her first outdoor state championship.

Guillory will be looking to make it a three-peat in the javelin as the LSU signee has won the last two LHSAA Class 5A state championships in the javelin.

ASH picked up 30 points in the relays. The Lady Trojans won the 4x100m (47.79) and finished second in both the 4x200m (1:41) and 4x400m (3:59.41).

A big reason for the Lady Trojan's success in the sprint relays was Alexandria sprinter Jakyra Edwards, who won the 100m (11.91).

Finishing ahead of ASH in the 4x200m and 4x400m was the Barbe Lady Bucs, who finished as the runner-up in the team standings with 89 points, 25 points behind the Lady Trojans.

Barbe was led by Ariel Williams, who won long jump (17-3), high jump (5-6), and 200m (24.84).

While Williams was the only athlete at the Region 1-5A Meet, there were a couple of athletes who won two gold medals in individual events.

Comeaux freshman Sya Bolden won both the 1600m (5:13.05) and then came back to win the 800m (2:21.98). Benton's Jamie Willis won both the 100m hurdles (14.71) and 300m hurdles (46.51)

Other winners include Byrd's Jenna Key in the 3200m (11:27.39), Barbe's Kennedi Burks in the 400m (56.05), Parkway's Jayla James in the shot put (37-0.5), Parkway's Mikaylah Williams in the discus (119-8), New Iberia Senior High's Laila Sigure in the triple jump (37-6).

Now Freeman and his Lady Trojans turn their attention to the LHSAA Class 5A State Championship on Saturday, May 6.

"It's only going to get more competitive," Freeman said about the state meet. "You've got to lock in. You've got to go to work. I'm happy for track to be on the map for Central Louisiana again. We want go represent this area, represent our families, and represent our school as best as we possibly can. So, that's what I'm preaching."
