Hornets Sweep DI; Episcopal, Mansfield Win in DII!

For the second year in a row, there was a sweep yesterday at the LHSAA State Indoor Championships in Baton Rouge. Last year, it was the Ruston Bearcats taking home both the boys' and girls' Division I indoor titles. Last night, the trophies didn't have that far of a drive-9.8 miles to be exact--as the Hornets of Scotlandville swarmed the competition inside the Carl Maddox Fieldhouse.

The Scotlandville boys' team, led by Broderick Davis, won with 62 points while Catholic, who took home the runner-up trophy for the second year in a row, scored 47 points. The Lady Hornets, led by juniors Makeriah Harris and Sade Gray, scored 66 points. St. Joseph's scored 55 points in their second consecutive state indoor runner-up performance.

"It was awesome," Scotlandville head coach Ursula Harris said. "The kids worked hard, the coaches came out and coached. They did what they were supposed to do. We had a game plan and they stuck to it and did great!"

Davis had a personal record of over a foot with a 24-0.75 effort on his second jump in the finals. The marks ranks No. 6 in the nation and No. 1 for juniors.

In the 60m hurdles, Davis, running in the finals with the fieldhouse composite record holder-John Curtis' Justin Horne- beat Horne and erased his record with a time of 7.84. Horne, who held the record with his 7.90 at the LSU High School Classic last month, finished second with a 8.01.

Scotlandville's Sade Gray won her first state title in the 60m (7.58), and finished second (58.08) to teammate Makeriah Harris (56.31)in the 400m. Harris also won the 60m hurdles (8.66). Both Gray and Harris joined teammates Dynasty Wilfred and Layden Jack to win the 4x400 relay (3:55.74)--setting a new meet record in the process. Gray was also on Scotlandville's winning 4x200 team, which also included Fatima Banks, Sincere Wilson, and Madyson Kent

Episcopal's girls did what no team has done since 2019-knock off St. Louis Catholic at an LHSAA D-II State Indoor Meet. The Lady Crusaders scored 80 points. St. Louisi Catholic was the runner-up with 68 points.

"We did outstanding, from the very beginning," Episcopal girls' head coach Bill Jones said. "Alana Simon tied the meet record in the high jump with a 5-8,  then she came back and won the long jump. This is only the second meet she has every done it. Addisyn Botos was seeded No. 13 in the shot put and won- which was amazing. Then we got on the track and the Cramer girls were their usual tough selves-Lucy especially who tripled (running the 800,1600, 3200). That's hard for anybody, especially an eighth grader. The 4x400 got on the podium and the 4x800 got on the podium. It was just a great overall meet."

After making history last spring winning the school's first state championship in 35 years, Mansfield head coach Mychal Word and his Wolverines have done it again, winning the D-II boys title, scoring 46 points-five more than defending state champion University Lab.

"It's truly a blessing," Word wrote in a Facebook post. "It's the first indoor state championship in school history and the first in Desoto Parish history. These guys worked so hard each and every day. A little hope is all you need."
