McNeese State junior Joshua Sawe has been named the Southland Conference male cross country runner of the week. Sawe was honored for his performance in last week’s Arkansas Chili Pepper 10K race in Fayetteville. He posted a 30:15 clocking in the race, leading the Cowboys to an eighth place team finish. He finished 13th individually. Sawe, a native of Kenya, is the first McNeese male runner to win the award this season. Earlier in the year Amy Guinn and Alvy Carragher shared a female runner of the week award. In other McNeese cross country news, the Cowboys finish at Arkansas last week lifted them to a No. 6 regional ranking by the U. S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Also, the Cowgirls moved up a notch in the standings to No. 12, both rankings in the South Central region. “We are right back where we were a year ago after Auburn (meet),” said McNeese head coach Brendon Gilroy. “Both men and women have moved up in the poll after our showing in Arkansas last weekend.” This week both teams have a bye, getting ready for the Southland Conference championshp meet Oct. 31 in Corpus Christi, TX.
