LSU High School Qualifier Preview

WATCH LIVE ON MILESPLIT.COM!

Ladies and Gentlemen, we are back in the saddle again for another LHSAA indoor track season! We are glad to be back to live stream the next three LSU meets. This week will be the LSU High School Qualifier, then the LSU Last Chance Qualifier, and grand finale is the LHSAA Indoor State Championships. We will see how the teams develop over the next few weeks. Who will emerge as the champs in the big and small school divisions? It will be exciting to find out! Let's take a look at some marquee events for this week based on the current heat sheets. Some of these are sure to produce some fireworks!

Boys High Jump: This event boasts the top 3 returning jumpers in the state from last year. Leading the way is Chris Hilton (Zachary). When he is on, there is nobody that can touch him. He cleared 7'0" at the indoor state championships last year. Second is Terrance "TP" Armstrong (Ruston). He comes in with a PR of 6'6" and finished 2nd at outdoor last year. Rounding out the top 3 is Ebenezer Aggrey (Cathlolic High), who also has a PR of 6'6" and finished 2nd at indoor last year. Let's see who can take off in this one.

Boys 60m: This could be a battle of this year's current leader Dapriest Hogans (Northwest) and returning champ Corey Wren (John Curtis). There is plenty of talent in this field, but those are the two standouts right now. Maybe someone can make a move on Saturday.

Girls 1600m:  Both 1600m fields are loaded this year. In the girl's field, we have the top 2 girls from the small school division in Annie Fink (Runnels) and Ansley Long (Cedar Creek). From the large school division, we have the reigning outdoor champ Hope Shales (Mt Carmel), along with Sophie Martin and Virginia Dirks (St. Josephs).

Boys 1600m: In what could be the race of the day, this field is loaded. Right now, the frontrunner has to Louden Boudreaux (Belle Chase). But right on his heels is a number of runners that includes Christopher Cuntz (Catholic High), William Ayim (Ruston), Luke Sweatman (Thibodaux), Trent Wells (CE Byrd), and James Christian (Episopal). Any one of these guys could win this thing so get ready for some fireworks!

Girls 400m:  If the boys 1600m is the number 1 race, this could be 1A. There are three girls that stand out going into Saturday. This race features indoor champ from last year Jada Williams (Ruston), outdoor champ Maygan Shaw (Pineville), and eighth grader Makeriah Harris (Plaquemine). Trinity Benson (Salmen) and Simone Pierre (MLK Charter) could also get in the mix.

Girls and Boys 4x400m Relays: Anybody who hangs around until the end of a track meet knows there is a reason the 4x400m is the last race. And while I know we are still early in the season and teams are juggling lineups to see who fits best on those teams, this is always a fun race to watch.

We look forward to seeing everybody at the track meet Saturday. To all the runners, if you are a winner in an event, please come up to broadcast booth and get an interview so we can post it on MileSplit.  If you can't make it out to the meet, please listen to the live broadcast. Good luck to all the runners Saturday!
