BATON ROUGE - Junior hurdler Adlus Wiltz and junior thrower Adonson Shallow led the way for the Southeastern Louisiana University track and field teams as the Lions and Lady Lions concluded day two of the LSU Relays in record-breaking fashion. Southeastern wrapped up their toughest meet of the year, so far, with five NCAA Mideast Regional Qualifiers and two meet records to its credit.
"This was a great meet for us," head coach Sean Brady said. "Our top-level athletes did what we expected them to do, for the most part. We had some of our second-tier kids respond when we put them in some pressure situations, and we got through this meet realtively healthy. So we met our goals coming into this week."
The Lions started the meet by getting a trio of NCAA Mideast Regional Qualifying performances on day one of the meet. Friday's action saw Shallow post a qualifying mark and meet record in the shot put with a first-place throw of 58 ft. 1.25 in. (17.71 m). Senior jumper Corey Billizone followed by matching his season best mark of 6 ft. 10.75 in. (2.10 m) to set a meet record and surpass the regional qualifying standard. Junior hurdler Damian Manning followed with a time of 14.21 in the 110 hurdles to qualify for the regional meet.
On Saturday, the Lions picked up where they left off. Wiltz impressed in the 400 m hurdles. The Waggaman native posted a fourth-place time of 52.34, beating the regional mark by 0.38 seconds.
Shallow returned on Saturday with another winning performance in the discus. The Kingston, St. Vincent and the Grenadines native was the top collegiate finisher with a throw of 181 ft. 2 in. (55.22), surpassing the NCAA Regional Qualifying mark of 51.70 m.
"We trained pretty hard coming into this meet, and it showed," Brady said. "Now we'll try to rest some people up for the Texas Relays next week and really look to get everyone in gear."
The Lions and Lady Lions will return to action when they visit the prestigious Texas Relays April 1-4.
