Shallow Named SLC Field Athlete, Newcomer of the Year

FRISCO, Texas – After making his presence felt in a big way at the 2009 Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships Feb. 20-21, Southeastern Louisiana University junior thrower Adonson Shallow was named the SLC’s Outstanding Field Athlete and Newcomer of the Year, the league office announced today.

“Adonson has made a significant impact on our program in a lot of ways, aside from the obvious,” head coach Sean Brady said.  “Besides being a tremendous athlete and thrower, he’s really become the leader of our throws group.  He’s always pushing everyone for that extra rep in the weight room or that extra throw at practice.  We knew he had these kids of performances in him when we signed him, but he’s exceeded our expectations on and off the track this year.”

Shallow led the Lions to their best ever finish at the SLC Indoor Championships by accumulating 16 of Southeastern’s third place total of 81.5 points in just two events.

The transfer from Central Arizona College got off to a fast start at the league meet when he shattered the school and Southland Conference records in the weight throw on the first day of competition.  Shallow’s record-setting toss of 65 ft. 2.25 in. (19.87 m) gave him ten points for first place and finished nearly four feet ahead of second place.

The Kingston, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines native led a dominant Southeastern throws group as one of four Lions to qualify for the finals in the weight throw, and one of three to record a point in that event.

Shallow returned on the second day to score six more critical points for the Lion cause with an All-Southland Conference performance in the shot put.  Shallow recorded a toss of 55 ft. 2.75 in. in the shot to finish third and secure his second All-SLC finish of the meet.

Shallow gives the Southeastern track and field and cross country program its fourth consecutive SLC Newcomer of the Year award winner.  Sophomore distance runner Henry Rop earned the award following the 2008 cross country and 2008 indoor and outdoor track seasons.
