SOUTHERN SPLITS CROSS-COUNTRY MEET WITH MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE

BATON ROUGE, LA -- Southern University men's and women's cross country finally got the chance to hit the trails, as they hosted the Southern University Invitational on Saturday morning. Due to Hurricane Ike, Mississippi Valley State was the only other team to participate. SU's cross-country season has been decimated by the 2008 Hurricane season. All meets had been canceled up to this date.

The Southern University women's team earned first place honors defeating Mississippi Valley State 22 to 33. Southern took the first three places, with freshman Mary Newton taking the win for the Lady Jaguars. She finished the 3.1 mile course in 20:58. Paula Walker was second (21:23), while Precious Collins was third (21:32). Sheena Thames finished sixth (24:49), while Lambreche Odeh was 10th (28:52)

On the men's side, Mississippi Valley State took top honors, defeating SU 16-43. SU's top finisher, KeDric Green finished 5th, covering the 4.0 mile course in 26:06. Cody Collins (30:25), Jordan Davis (31:32), Leon Citizen (34:46) and Simon Freeman (41:12) finished 8, 9, 10 and 11th.
