ULM Track and Field Opens Outdoor Season with Six Winning Marks at NSU Relays

NATCHITOCHES, La.The ULM track and field team opened the outdoor season in a big way, claiming 21 top-five finishes at the Northwestern State Relays in Natchitoches, La. at the Walter Ledet Track Complex on Saturday afternoon.

 

“Saturday was obviously a good day for us,” ULM track and field head coach J.D. Malone said. “We have been beating ourselves up physically with a tough training schedule and I thought it really paid off for us. It is great to get off to a strong start and I think we definitely set ourselves up to be in a position to be successful this outdoor season.”

 

ULM finished with a meet-high six individual winners, including four on the women’s side and two on the men’s side, to pace the eight squads competing in the event. Freshman Kyle Kent claimed first in the javelin throw with a NCAA Regional qualifying heave of 65.08 meters.

 

Destiny Montemayor finished claimed first in the discus throw with a toss of 45.84 meters and second in the hammer throw with a toss of 51.16 meters.

 

The Warhawks also excelled on the track, sweeping the titles on the men’s and women’s side of the 1500 meter run. Freshman Brittany Blackmon won on the women’s side with a time of 4:56.45 while senior Matt Brophy won the men’s race with a time of 4:07.91. Freshman William Robbins finished second on the men’s side with a time of 4:11.80.

 

The women’s 4 X 200 meter relay team and the men’s 1600 sprint medley team also claimed top finishes to round out the Warhawks meet winners.

 

ULM will continue its outdoor season on Saturday, March 22 in Ruston, La. at the Louisiana Tech Twilight meet. The Warhawks will host their only outdoor meet of the season on Saturday, April 26.
