ULM Track & Field Fares Well in Final Tuneup Prior to Sun Belt Championships

LUBBOCK, Texas—The ULM track & field team took advantage of its final tune up before the Sun Belt Indoor Championships with a solid performance at the Texas Tech Invitational on Saturday.

“I thought that everyone performed well considering the tough training schedule they have been on,” ULM head coach J.D. Malone said. “We cut back some today and didn’t have a lot of athletes competing in multiple events. I think we are in a good position heading into the Sun Belt meet.”

Junior Heather Davis continued to have an impressive winter winning the high jump with a season-best leap of 5-08.75 feet, while Rani Giladi finished second among collegiate performers in the men’s long jump with a distance of 23-00.75 feet.

Destiny Montemayor followed up last week’s school record performance in the weight throw with a third place finish on Saturday. Ryan Hisaw had similar success in the men’s shot put finishing third behind a pair of Texas Tech throwers.

Moses Chelimo will take some momentum heading into the conference meet finishing third in the 5000m run with a time of 15:33.81.

Mychal Word and Bola Shoyebi turned in top five finishes in highly contested 400m and 200m races. Word took fifth in the men’s 400m with a time of 48.76 seconds, while Shoyebi crossed the line in fourth place in the women’s 200m in a time of 25.01 seconds.

The Warhawks have two weeks to rest and prepare for the Sun Belt Indoor Championships in Murfreesboro, Tenn. on Feb. 23-24. The men finished seventh and the women in 10th place in last year’s conference meet.
