INDIANAPOLIS – Northwestern State freshman Trecey Rew had a top 10 finish in Thursday’s shot put event at the 2007 USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Rew, a native of Garland, Texas, threw 45-11 1/4 to place eighth in her flight and ninth overall. She was the third highest collegian to place.

Sara Neubauer of the Air Force Academy won the event with a mark of 48-10 1/4. Nneka Ugochukw (unattached) followed with a 48-08 throw to finish second and Emily Vannoy (Mountain Express Track Club) was third with a throw of 48-04 3/4.

She’ll get another chance at qualifying to compete on the national team at the Pan American Junior Games later this summer when she takes part in the discuss event beginning at 1:30 EDT on Friday.

“She wasn't a discus thrower in high school so she's still learning, but that may turn out to be her best event. She can throw far right now and she'll improve,” said NSU throws coach Mike Heimerman.

Heading into Thursday’s event, Rew ranked sixth in the shot put with a 48-1 3/4 mark and 11th in the discuss in the USA Juniors field with her season’s best 151-10 throw that broke Tabitha Johnigan’s eight-year-old NSU school record of 151-1.

More than 600 athletes are competing in the event that is running concurrently with the AT&T USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Athletes who are not yet 20 years old in 2007 can qualify for the junior national by reaching performance standards in their events.
