LAKE CHARLES – The Northwestern State cross country teams rounded out the 2013 season with a 12th place finish for the Demons and a 14th place mark for the Lady Demons at the Southland Conference championships hosted by McNeese State Friday morning at the Ward 3 Recreation Complex.
Lamar swept top honors for both teams, followed by Stephen F. Austin in second for the men and Central Arkansas as the runner-up for the women.
"Despite our overall finish, we ran good races and they allowed us to evaluate how much everyone has improved throughout the season," said first year head coach Amy Guinn. "Everyone finished well and gave it their best effort."
Sophomore Mitch Landry crossed first for the Demons in 50th place with a time of 27:37.9 in the 8-kilometer race, followed by Albert Gladney in 58th with a time of 27:56.5.
Jeremy Elliot, Lucas Moncla, William Harris and Skylor Reese also competed for the Demons, crossing the line in 75th, 86th, 91st and 92nd, respectively.
Freshman Annie Fillers led the Lady Demons with a 77th place overall finish in the 6-kilometer race in 26:14.7. Shannon Moore notched 80th place in 27:06.6, followed by Asah James, Maya Robertson, Mawardi Berkhadley and Taylor Walker to round of the team.
"As the season comes to an end we can enjoy some down time before regrouping and getting back to work for the indoor season," said Guinn. "We're all looking forward to the track season and to see what we can do as a team."
The indoor season for both teams will kick-off on Jan. 17 at the Texas A&M 12-Team Invitational in College State, Texas.
