THE YEAR IN PICTURES! No. 6--Rubbing Is Racing!

ROEMER (LEFT) AND MADDEN (RIGHT) SPRINT DOWN THE HOME STRETCH OF THE 800m AT HGR!

Anybody who knows the history behind's Ruston's "Hoss" Garrett Relays knows that it is more than a just another high school meet. It's an event to honor the man who devoted his life to building boys to men in this North Louisiana town. It's also a time for senior Bearcats to reflect on their years in the program and to share with younger teammates why it has been so meaningful.

It's a special meet.

And the 2023 version provided some special moments, none more so than the boys 800m where Ruston's Bryar Madden looked to be the odds-on favorite in the event. If Madden expected then win to come easy, he was dead wrong.

Loyola College Prep's Tripp Roemer made him earn it as he moved out to lane two during the race's final 20 meters with thoughts of slipping past Madden for the win.

But Madden would have none of it as he threw his right over in lane two before diving and rolling across the finish line for the win in 1:56.05. Roemer finished in 1:56.06.

The photographer for this picture was Josh McDaniel. McDaniel is one of the busiest sports photographers in North Louisiana. You may see him at the LHSAA State Football Championships working for GeauxPreps. Or you may find him at Louisiana Tech football games--or other sporting events. MileSplit was lucky enough to get him on the calendar for the "Hoss" Garrett Relays as well as the 2023 LHSAA State Cross Country Championships.
