Cross Country teams fare well in season opening meet

LAKE CHARLES, La. — After having a week washed out of the training schedule, the Southeastern Louisiana men's and women's cross country teams opened the season with renewed vigor Tuesday at the MSU Cross Country 6K Relay.


“The conditions weren't terrible, but it was muddy and hot,” distance coach Brent Alfred said. “After a week off, we did okay. Our kids put forth a good effort and had more intensity than last year. I think we're going in the right direction”

The men's duo of Paul Arthur and Matt Mouton finished ninth and combined, with each athlete running their own 3K leg, to turn in Southeastern's best time (20:09) in the paired relay. Freshmen Harry Wiggins and Kyle Rudolph placed 10th with a time of 20:42.

Junior Joseph LeGrange combined with freshman Joseph Edwards for a 12th-place finish and a time of 20:53. Tyler Waggenspack and Scott Richardson combined to finished 13th (23:23).

Placing 15th and 19th respectively were the duos of Shaq Windley and Tarvoris Mack (25:12) as well as Abram Taylor and Jordan Rosemond (28:31).

LAKE CHARLES, La. – The Nicholls State University men's and women's cross country teams opened the regular season on Tuesday participating in the McNeese Relays and the team of Tessni Carruthers and Jackie White pushed the women's team to their second-straight relays title while the men's group of Sebie O'Neill andKane Daigle finished 11th.

 
The Colonel women won the event last season, as Carruthers, who was on the winning relay group last season, and White finished the 6K event in 23:04 minutes, as the team of Sarah Pressley and Emily Charlesworth finished fourth overall with a time of 23:43 to give Nicholls two teams in the top five.
 
O'Neill and Daigle was the only group on the men's side for the Colonels and finished in 20:47, just .05 seconds away from a top-ten finish.
 
The tandem of Ashley Johnson and Victoria Williams finished 13th overall with a time of 27:35, while Emily Carrere and newcomer Maria Mondello finished in 31:08 for a 17th place finish.


Leading the way for the Lady Lions was the duo of Heather Fitzhenry and Lindsey Toups, placing seventh with a time of 24:06. Senior Bethany Burst and freshmanLeticia Shaban weren't far behind (24:24) in eighth place.

Finishing 10th, Emily Pevey and Ashley Pfantz clocked in at 26:27 while Katie Neil and Jennifer Ernst placed 12th with an effort of 27:14. Alicia Noel and Ambur Jones' time of 30:50 put them in 15th place.

Southeastern returns to action Sept. 15 at the Azalea City Classic in Mobile, Ala.
