Cajuns Contingent Takes Part in Day One of NCAA East Prelims

Day 1 Results of NCAA East Preliminary Rounds

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Ragin’ Cajuns track and field squad opened competition in the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds on Thursday as seven athletes took to the surface at Hodges Stadium on the University of North Florida campus.

Each Cajun made their NCAA outdoor postseason debut during Thursday’s action. Unfortunately, their 2012 outdoor campaign came to a close as neither athlete was able to crack to Top 12 in their respective event.

“Today ended up being a tough day for us. This was the day where it was the biggest long shots we had, but it was a bit of a surprise for us,” head coach Lon Badeaux said. “Kirsten (Meche) did a good job in the javelin placing higher than she was expected.

“We still have our featured events to come, so we will stay positive and move forward to tomorrow.”

Kirsten Meche garnered a Top 25 finish for Louisiana in the women’s javelin throw. Meche registered a distance of 41.30m/135-6. For Meche, it was her fourth straight javelin throw of 40-plus meters dating back to the April 21 LSU Alumni Gold.

Mayme Cook, a Notre Dame High of Crowley product, reached 40-plus meters once again in the javelin throw. Cook notched a distance of 40.44m/132-8 which placed her 34th in the event. She ended her inaugural season with a 40-plus meters throw in each event.

The freshman duo of Joshua Sigler and Devin Davis both registered their finishing marks in the first round of the long jump. Sigler landed 32nd at 7.09m/23-3 ¼ while Davis finished 36th at 6.98m/22-11.

Casey Comeaux (55.40m/181-9 in men’s javelin throw), Justin Jones (10.86 in men’s 100 meters) and Alexis Malone (12.45 in women’s 100 meters) were the other Cajuns to see action on Thursday.

Of the remaining eight Cajuns in the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds, three will be in action on Friday. Kenneth Bellard and O’Daylon Thibeaux are scheduled to take part in the men’s triple jump at 4:30 p.m. (EDT) while Kacey Elphage runs in the opening round of the women’s 100 meter hurdles at 5:30 p.m. (EDT).

Albert Fournette (men’s shot put), Sander Maes (men’s high jump), Jasmine Manuel (women’s triple jump), Chris Roy (men’s pole vault) and Michael Vani (men’s pole vault) will make their bid for the 2012 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday.
