Cowboy distance medley relay places second at Florida Relays


GAINESVILLE, FL – A second place effort by the McNeese State distance medley relay team of Alex Bruce-Littlewood, Torian Lindsey, Joshua Sawe and David Rooney led the Cowboys and the Cowgirls during the final day of the Florida Relays on Saturday.

The foursome posted a 9:51.80 clocking, trailing champion Indiana by only eight-tenths of a second.  Georgia Tech was third, East Carolina fourth and Georgia fifth.

Splits for the Cowboys in the event had Bruce-Littlewood leading off with a 2:59, Lindsey running a 48.5 in the 400 meters, Sawe a 1:55 in the 800 meters and Rooney a 4:07 on the final leg.

The time was also a school record.

“I thought that we had a good day overall,” said head coach Brendon Gilroy.  “The ladies also performed well in their relay races.”

There weren't many individual events on Saturday as relay races took over. Parminder Singh did participate in the high jump for the Cowboys and La'Shantena Rounds tossed the hammer and Ashlee Smith the shot put for the Cowgirls.

Singh tied for 12th place with a leap of 6-6.75, Rounds tossed the hammer 165-6 for 13th place and Smith went  45-1 for 10th place.

The Cowgirl 4x100 shuttle hurdle relay team of Mariah Georgetown, Desarae Couthren, Jasmine George and Kayla Fontenot finished sixth in this event with a time of 58.78.  It is believed to be the first time McNeese has ever participated in this event.

The 4x100 relay team of Georgetown, Ashleigh Wells, Paige Lynch and Jacqueline Berry posted their top time of the season, a 46.07 effort for 21st place and the 4x200 team of Lynch, Georgetown, Couthren and Wells ran a season best 1:39.84 for 19th place.

In other relay races for the Cowgirls, the team of Wells, Lynch, Simone Johnson and Amy Talbot ran a 4:04.51 for 12th place in the 1600 sprint medley and Jillian Biagini, Lauren Cooper, Angelina Covington and Kaitlyn Jeter placed 13th in the 4x800 relay with a 9:53.81 clocking.

Cowboy football wide receiver Ernest Celestie joined the team and ran on the 4x100 relay team along with Morgan Wells, Lindsey and Tevon Remo that posted a 42.44 effort for 31st place.

Lindsey, Remo, Cody Skarupa and Sawe ran 3:46.21 for 22nd place in the 1600 meter relay.

Next up for the Cowboys and the Cowgirls will be the Mt. SAC distsance carnival in California and the Southeastern Louisiana Invitational in two weeks.
