Metro Boys Cross Country Results

Brother Martin and Dominican ran with purpose, capturing the boys and girls team titles in the Metro Area Cross Country Meet at Audubon Park.
Having placed four in the top 10, the Crusaders extended their team win streak to four while Jesuit’s Neal Fitzpatrick glided to the finish line as the boys champion with a time of 15:40.
“The course was flat and fast,” Fitzpatrick said. “Though it was a little hot, this was the best course this season so far. It was my first race ever running here.”
Brother Martin garnered the team title with 36 points, followed by Jesuit (73), Rummel (78), Country Day (113), Holy Cross (147), Newman (169), Karr (194), John Curtis (210), Chalmette (213), Holy Rosary (313), Lusher (322), East Jefferson (330), and Miller-McCoy (338).
Dominican sophomore Mia Meydrich edged Country Day’s Lane Porter by two seconds for the girls title, running 18:51 on the course. Although it was her first race on the course, she entered the Metro Meet with an inside edge on the field of competition.
“I live about five minutes away, so when I miss a practice, I just come over here and get my workouts in,” said Meydrich. “I’m pretty use to the course even though I’ve never raced on it. I know it a little better than my teammates.”
Dominican relied on Meydrich’s knowledge in winning the girls team title with a season-best 19 points, ahead of Mount Carmel (78), McGehee (105), Sacred Heart (111), Newman (121), Country Day (164), Cabrini (169), Ursuline (212), Ben Franklin (284), Lusher (285), John Curtis (316), Chalmette (327), Xavier (355), Academy of Our Lady (370).
It was the first race for many of the competitors since a majority of the area races have been staged at the course in City Park. As far as many of the participants are concerned, the advantages and disadvantages cancel out. But, the crisp and dry conditions were easy to like, and many took the opportunity to improve their times as the state meet looms just two weeks from now.
Meydrich’s time was a person best, and somewhat of a surprise.
“I like the City Park course, but I didn’t think this would be as good of a race as it was,” she said. “I never would have expected me being the Metro champ. This is incredible.”
