Baton Rouge, La. – The University of Louisiana's track and field teams began the 2006 indoor season Saturday, at the LSU Purple Tiger Invitational. The Cajuns posted strong individual performances in both the running and field events.
"We were excited about beginning the indoor season at LSU," said Head Coach Lance Veazey. "We started the season facing tough competition, which is definitely beneficial to our team."
For the men, Freshman Phillip Guidry placed second in the one-mile run with a time of 4:41.02. D.J. Hebert finished fifth in the same event posting a time of 5:06.71.
The Cajuns took third and fourth place in the 60-meter hurdles. Junior Kyle Ward's time of 8.10 earned a third place finish and sophomore Luke Moody placed fourth with a time of 8.21.
Freshman Michael Istre placed 10th in the 60-yard dash with a time of 7.08.
In the field events, Brian Pearson placed fourth in the long jump posting a mark of 21-04.75.
On the women's side, junior Leah Legere finished third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:29.74. Freshman Casey Zeller posted a 9.61 in the 60-meter hurdles.
In the field events, freshman Toni Lee took second place in the long jump with a mark of 17-11.00. Senior Andree Bonvillain placed fifth in the pole vault at 10-11.75.
"Overall it was a good meet," added Veazey. "Our young athletes got the chance to perform and gain some valuable experience."
The Cajuns will return to LSU Friday, Jan. 27th to compete in the Bayou Bengal Invitational.
