Track & Field Qualfies Five for East Prelims

 

MONROE, La. – Five Warhawks qualified for the NCAA Track & Field East Preliminary Round that will take place May 26-28 in Bloomington, Ind., announced Thursday by the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Track & Field Committee. The East Prelim is one of two regionals made up of the top 48 athletes in each event and is the qualifier for the NCAA Championships, June 8-11, in Des Moines, Iowa.

 

Following its best-ever finish at the Sun Belt Championships, the ULM men send four athletes to the prelims, including 2010 All-American Luther Ambrose in the 100-meter dash. Joining Ambrose on the men’s side will be junior Derek Dark in the shot put, senior Kyle Kent in the javelin and junior Richard McKay in the javelin.

 

Senior Lakeitha Elmore is the lone qualifier on the women’s side, competing in the shot put.

 

Ambrose will be making his second appearance at regionals after finishing in third place and earning All-America honors last season in the 100-meter dash. Ambrose won his second consecutive Sun Belt title in the 100 this past weekend and has a best time of 10.47 this season.

 

Dark will be making his second appearance at the NCAA East Regional after qualifying a year ago. Dark earned All-Sun Belt honors this season with a third-place finish at the Championships. Dark’s best throw of 17.14 meters (56-3.00) ranks No. 36 in the East Region entering the weekend. 

 

The Warhawks will send a pair of javelin athletes to regionals for the third straight year with Kent and McKay each qualifying. McKay has been ranked in the top 5 in the East Region all season and enters the weekend with a best throw of 73.68 meters (241-9.00). Kent, who is now a four-time regional qualifier, seeks his third trip to the NCAA Championships. He ranks No. 17 in the East Region with a best mark of 69.95 meters (229-6.00).

 

Elmore makes her third appearance at regionals after winning the Sun Belt title in the shot put.
