DeBowles Highlights Final Day at C-USA Championships

 

HOUSTON - On the final day of the 2011 Conference USA Track and Field Championships, the Tulane track and field programs wrapped up their stay with some season-best performances. Zandria Debowles led the way with a runner-up finish in the 400-meter hurdles on the final day of the championships to help the Green Wave compile 30.50 points as a team and finish tenth, while the men placed eighth with ten points.

DeBowles continued her strong senior campaign with a career-best time in the 400-meter hurdles at the championships, crossing the finish line in 58.82-seconds. The Marietta, Ga. native posted her personal best time and claimed Second Team All-Conference USA in the event, earning eight points for the team in the process. For DeBowles, it marks the fourth time she has broken the 60-second mark this season. Also in the event, Candice St. Etienne placed eighth and grabbed another point for the Green Wave.

The 4x100-meter relay team opened the final day of the championships with a solid performance of 45.54 to grab a third place finish in the event. The team of Jerica BanksTiffany GeorgeHilary Woods and Tiffanie Smithplaced third behind UCF and Houston in the event to score six points for the Olive and Blue, while Joanna Lapucha grabbed the lone points in a field event with a fifth place showing in the pole vault. Lapucha, just a freshman, passed on the opening height and then cleared the next three progressions on her first attempts to claim a career-best height of 3.45-meters.

Rebecca Coady placed seventh in the 1500-meter run, as the senior closed out her career with a career-best time of 4:28.98 to finish seventh overall in the event. On the other end of the eligibility, freshman Tiffany Georgebroke the tape in 11.63-seconds to grab an eighth place finish in the 100-meter dash. 

 
 
 

Jon Frano competed in the 400-meter dash finals and placed eighth with a time of 48.46. The sophomore posted his career-best time of 48.13 in yesterday's prelims and followed that up with his second fastest time of the season in the event. Also on the track, Mike Mainguy grabbed a new personal best time in the 5,000-meter run, crossing the finish line in 16:19.92.

In the field, a pair of men's participants posted solid showings, with Max Yankerclearing a career-best height of 1.98-meters in the high jump and Julius Warmsley posting near personal best in the javelin. Warmsley was the top freshman performer in the event and placed seventh with a toss of 59.22-meters to mark his second best throw of his young career.

The 4x400-meter relay team of Frano, Chris Arechiga, Koplan Nwabuoku andJordon Holtzman closed out the meet on a high note for the Olive and Blue with a new season best time in the event. The quartet crossed the finish line in 3:17.78 and grabbed a seventh place showing in the championships final event
