Warhawks Earn Three Titles at North Texas Classic

DENTON, Texas - The ULM track & field team picked up three victories as it wrapped up action in the North Texas Classic Saturday at Fouts Field.

Senior Jerrica Thomas picked up her second consecutive title in the women's triple jump, while senior Kyle Kent won the men's javelin and sophomore Daniel Mutai won the men's 1,500-meter run.

Thomas leapt 12.22 meters in to earn the title in the triple jump. She bested Destinee Nixon of Texas-Arlington, who finished with a best mark of 11.90 meters to finish second.

In the men's javelin, Kent threw a best mark of 65.20 meters in his final attempt to win the title. Kent's win gives the Warhawks back-to-back titles in the javelin as teammate Richard McKay won the event last week at the Louisiana Classics.

Mutai picked up his first victory of the season in the men's 1,500-meter run. He clocked a time of 4:03.32 to best a pair of Texas-Arlington runners for the title.

Also on the men's side, junior Josh Howard came up just short of winning the men's triple jump despite a season-high leap of 15.07 meters. Mark Slone of Angelo State recorded a best jump of 15.35 meters to win the event.

Clint Broussard finished third in the men's high jump with a best mark of 1.96 meters and junior Derek Dark finished with fifth in the men's shot put with a toss of 15.88 meters.

On the women's side, senior Lakeitha Elmore tallied runner-up finishes in the shot put and the hammer throw.  Elmore had a best mark of 48.61 meters in the hammer to finish behind Ayla Gill of SMU (55.45 meters).

Simone du Toit of SMU edged out Elmore in the shot put with a mark of 16.61 meters. Elmore, who had won the shot put title in three consecutive weeks, finished second with a best mark of 14.49 meters.

Celeste Rumphs finished third in the women's long jump with a best mark of 5.43 meters and Jennifer Goss had a best throw of 33.91 meters to finish fourth in the women's javelin.

Both squads will return to action next Saturday at the SFA Quad in Nacogdoches, Texas
