Valure finished the mile run in 4:13.24, over two seconds ahead of his closest competitor Robert Goodwin of McNeese State (4:15.25), to claim Southeastern's lone individual title and first-ever in the event. It was also the Lions' first-ever individual title on the men's side as Valure joined former Lady Lion winners Natasha Coleman (long jump, 2001) and Christine Amertil (200M, 2000/400M, 2000 and 2001).
The Lions finished with 40 points, over 10 more than the previous high of 29.25 set in 2003. The Lady Lions who jumped out to a solid start on Friday with 19 points, mustered 12 on the final day to finish in seventh place with 31 points. The total was the third-most ever for the Lady Lions and the seventh-place finish was matched the best-ever showing (7th, 2000) and was a major improvement over 10th place finishes the three previous years.
A major force in the Lady Lions turnabout was Shakeitha Henfield who finished second in the women's 400 meters breezing in with a time of 56.34. Shanna Likas had a solid showing in the mile run with a sixth place finish (5:10.47) while Mandy Wallace, who set a school record Friday with a fifth place finish in the 5,000 meters, added an 8th place finish in the 3,000 with a time of 10:26.72.
But it was on the men's side where most of the action was located on Saturday with 31 points scored by the Lions on the afternoon. Valure was the high point scorer for Southeastern but impressive performances abounded with Tremaine White's school-record toss of 54-06.75 in the men's shot put good for a fourth place finish. Ruben Stephens also scored in the event with an eighth place finish (51.00.00). Lazedrick Cowart added a third-place finish in the men's 400 clocking 50.11.
Randall\'s personal best in the triple jump was an outstanding leap of 48-04.75 and good for eight points in the standings. Finally, the 4X400 meter relay team of Daniel Varnado, Cowart, Jamien Anderson and Brent Alford finished eighth with a time of 3:28.20 to score for the Lions.
Overall, Stephen F. Austin dethroned defending champion Texas State to claim both the men's and women's team titles.
