ARLINGTON, TX - Amy Guinn won her second title while Jordan Neil and Ashlee Smith both claimed runnerup spots to highlight McNeese State's performance in the final day of the Southland Conference track and field championship meet on Sunday. Guinn, who had won the 10,000 meter run on Friday's opening day, turned in a 17:31.38 clocking to win the women's 5,000 meters by more than two seconds on the final day. She becomes the first double winner for the Cowgirls at the meet since Sita Waru won both events in 2001. Neil, running in his final outdoor championship for the Cowboys, ran a 3:55.24 for second place in the men's 1500 meters. He was less than a second behind Lamar's Francis Kasagula who claimed the title in 3:54.29. Smith tossed the discus a career best 156-7 for the runnerup title in that event, her mark coming on her very last attempt. That effort also qualified her for the world junior championship which will be held later in the summer. In team scoring, the Cowboys placed in six events during the final day and wound up with 76 points for fifth place. The Cowgirls marked in three events and finished with 51 points for ninth place. Both McNeese totals surpassed last year's point production. UT San Antonio won the men's title with 148 points and was followed by SFA with 134, Southeastern Louisiana 99.5, UTA 94.5, McNeese 76, Northwestern State 73, Lamar 66, Texas State 52.5, Sam Houston State 42, Central Arkansas 23 and A&M-Corpus Christi 7.5. SFA won the women's team title with 201.5 points and was followed by UTA with 102, Texas State 80.5, UTSA 70, Sam Houston State and Northwestern State 67 each, A&M-Corpus Christi 65, Southeastern Louisiana 57, McNeese 51, Nicholls State 43, Lamar seven and Central Arkansas five. Others scoring points for the Cowboys on the final day were Michael Dyer with a fourth place in the 800 meter run (1:53.23), Benjamin Reynolds with a fifth in the high hurdles (14.46), Jared Crafton with an eighth place in the discus (143-3), the 4x100 meter relay team of Ryan Thomason, Torian Lindsey, Sam Bowers andCharles Jackson with a season best 41.33 for sixth place and the 4x400 meter team of Donovan Anderson, Michael Washington, Chris Avery II and Lindsey with a season best 3:13.32 clocking for fifth place. The Cowgirls also got points from Tinette Burger who finished fourth in the 1500 meter run with a 4:41.89 clocking. Although they didn't add points to the team totals, Lance Ardoin finished 12th in the pole vault at 14-8, Jarrett LeBlanc was 10th in the 5000 meters at 15:16.21, Johnathan Koenck was 18th at 15:33.1 and Ryan Barrow was 20th at 15:42.04. Also, Candice McCormick finished 15th in the women's 5000 meter run at 18:51.43 and the 4x400 meter relay team of Ashleigh Wells, Racheal Easton, D'Anna Lambert and Kara Slaydon placed 10th with a 3:56.83 effort which was a season best.
