NSU 4x400 relay team 7th in star-studded final

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Northwestern State ran two seconds slower than its season-best 4x400 meter relay time and finished seventh Saturday in a high-powered championship final won by Baylor to cap the Drake Relays track and field meet.

NSU's foursome of Michael Batts, Kendal Taylor, Justin Walker and Michael Green ran 3:09.12, well back of their 3:07.06 time three weeks earlier in a win at the Texas Relays. Baylor won Saturday in 3:03.29, followed by Iowa (3:05.73), Alabama (3:06.52), Ohio State (3:07.43), Illinois (3:08.30), Ole Miss (3:08.33), NSU and Michigan (3:09.31).

The Demons had the fifth-best qualifying time in the event Friday among the eight quartets that reached the finals.

Also Saturday, the Lady Demons' sprint medley team of Shamaigun VanBuren, Anna Forest, Constance Seibles and Andrea Warren took 17th with a 4:00.57 time over 1600 meters.

Northwestern will host its NSU Invitational, the only home meet of the season, next Saturday at the Walter Ledet Track Complex.
